Reset

And here we are at the end, finally. The calendar’s just one page (if you still use a paper calendar, that is—I’ll admit that I don’t, although I do have a planner notebook), and the schedule is likely filled with more fun than work. At least, I hope it’s that for you!

This will be a short newsletter since the end of my year is shaping up to be fairly busy. I’m almost done with the first draft of a queer holiday romcom, and I’m in the very early stages of another project that is so nascent I really don’t want to talk about it for fear of jinxing it.

I feel like I’ve been in need of a reset both creatively and motivationally. This isn’t unusual for me; it’s something that typically happens at the end of a semester or around the holidays. (In December, it’s both.) Routine gets disrupted, obligations increase, and suddenly I’m up until midnight randomly scrolling social media while babysitting bread dough that refuses to rise for a party the next day. (It did, eventually.)

I think of all the things I’ve started this year that I have yet to finish, and all the things I want to accomplish next year. Admittedly, the year end/new year is a completely arbitrary dividing line, but it’s one we all (more or less) agree on.

But every day, every hour is an opportunity to begin again.

Chasing Joy My stuff Recently, it dawned on me that several of my short stories that have been published are now also out of print—either due to magazines folding or anthologies fading into obscurity along with their publishers. So I figured I might as well dust them off and give them a new lease on life. All of which is to say I have the original files and some ebook-formatting software that I kind of know how to use. I’m making these available for free/pay what you want over at ko-fi.com....

First things first.... If you’re like me—well, if you’re like me, I am terribly sorry, but that’s another thing entirely. Anyway, the relentless drumbeat of awful news has been getting to me lately. The other day my husband (I am still getting used to saying that, and I don’t think I will ever get tired of it) gave me a hug while I was in the kitchen making dinner, and he asked me what was wrong. “Everything,” I said. It feels like that a lot. For me, the antidote to despair is action, even a...
