A film? Maybe! (And a couple favors to ask)

A film of my story? Maybe! (Which is why I have a couple favors to ask)

TL;DR: A story I wrote could potentially be made into an indie film! Check out the crowdfunding campaign here, chip in if you can, and help spread the word!

Okay, I know I said I was going to take the summer off from this little newsletter, but I’m decloaking for a moment because I have some potentially big news.

(Also, what was I thinking taking off for the whole summer? June is Pride month! And this year we could really use some queer joy, you know?)

Back in 2009, my first short story, “At the End of the Leash,” was published in an anthology called Fool for Love: New Gay Fiction. It’s a boy meets boy story about a dog walker who runs into and falls for a former client, a businessman who doesn’t realize that a) this is the guy who used to walk his dog b) whom he fired. Oops.

Hijinks ensue, along with a lot of snogging.

Fast forward to now, and independent filmmaker Daniel Lui is adapting it for a short film. (I am practicing a lot of restraint to not end every sentence in an exclamation point, by the way.) He’s already cast actor Noah Ricketts (from Fellow Travelers, American Gods, and The Great Gatsby) as Brian, the dog walker.

This is exciting! (I’m allowed at least one exclamation mark, right?) However, I need to ask two favors:

  1. Check out the crowdfunding campaign at Seed and Spark and, if you’re able, back the campaign to see this film come to life!
  2. If you don’t have the bandwidth to donate (or even if you do), help spread the word! Share the link on socials. Share the YouTube teaser. (I’ve embedded it below, but it may take you to YouTube directly because who knows if I did it right. Also, Noah Ricketts is really cute, right? And so’s the dog!) Tell your friends! Your family! Your enemies! Your frenemies!

There are a little under nine days left in the campaign, which is nearing 50% funded. Let’s make this happen!

Also also: If you donate, send me a screenshot of the confirmation, and I’ll send you a copy of the short story (in PDF format) for free. Daniel’s script updates the story for the screen, so you’ll also get to see how he’s put his unique spin on it. (I got a chance to read it and really like it.)

OK, that’s it for now. Happy Pride!

Going short It’s September! Did you miss me? (OK, maybe don’t answer that.) I hope you had as good a summer as we can be expected to have when the world is almost literally on fire and fascism is on the march around the globe. At times like this it’s hard for me to see the point in, well, anything. But I think this is when we absolutely need to recognize the people and the things that are worth fighting for and surviving for. This, at least, helps balance out the unmitigated rage I feel most...

Two ducks swimming in calm water with blurred background.

Adventures in Querying The time in between publications is like watching a duck on the water. He just looks like he’s floating there, but under the surface, his legs are paddling like a motherf***er. I am that duck. Quack. But yeah, the last thing I got published was a short story in Uncharted magazine last year. Go check out “Grand Canyon,” inspired by a story my college friend Matt wrote about the Grand Canyon disappearing from the Arizona desert. I spent like thirty years wondering, “Where...

Chasing Joy My stuff Recently, it dawned on me that several of my short stories that have been published are now also out of print—either due to magazines folding or anthologies fading into obscurity along with their publishers. So I figured I might as well dust them off and give them a new lease on life. All of which is to say I have the original files and some ebook-formatting software that I kind of know how to use. I’m making these available for free/pay what you want over at ko-fi.com....
